| Eco-Celeb of the Week: Sting Source: econewsnetwork.org Eco News Network presents our favorite eco-celeb of the week. Each week we will post an article on our favorite actor, actress, musician, etc. who is not only an exceptional artist, but someone who contributes greatly to the environment. We hope you enjoy! This week we focus on one of the most successful singers from The Police and as an individual, Englishman Sting. Sting’s music career has produced some well-known hits like ‘Roxanne,’ ‘Fields of Gold’ and ‘Every Breath You Take,’ but his chart-topping songs aren’t the only successes he obtains. The singer has a true passion for the environment, especially when it comes to the rainforest. He seems to know a little bit about saving the rainforest, since he created his own organization in 1989 alongside wife Trudie Styler. The Rainforest Foundation UK fights for the protection of tropical rainforests and its species worldwide. According to Sting’s foundation, every year an area of a rainforest the size of England and Wales is cut down. Well thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Sting, more than 100,000 square km of rainforest has been protected, thus far. RFUK works in more than 20 countries across three continents such as Cameroon, Peru, Republic of Congo and the Central African Republic tackling deforestation (locally and globally) and supporting indigenous peoples, their land and their lives. In addition to all that’s mentioned above, the singer also holds benefit concerts where his love of singing and the environment is united. The latest concert was held in 2010 in New York City with a little help from his friends. You may have heard of Lady Gaga and Elton John? Yes, we thought so. Well these two helped Sting raise money for the rainforest, along with celebrating RFUK’s 21st birthday. He also been awarded for his accomplishments and in 2008 Sting, his wife and former President Bill Clinton were all honored at the Oceana Partners Award Gala for their huge contributions to the environment. Sting and Trudie were recognized for The Rainforest Foundation and the more than $25 million they helped raise with their 15 benefit concerts since the organization was first founded.
