6th European Organic Congress - “Smart change - towards a sustainable CAP” - Copenhagen, Denmark - 17-18 April 2012

The IFOAM EU Group, in cooperation with Organic Denmark, announces the 6th European Organic Congress in Copenhagen, Denmark, 17th-18th of April 2012.

With 200 participants expected, including high-level speakers from the European Commission, the European Parliament and the European organic sector, the 6th European Organic Congress will take place at a crucial point in time for the debate on the future Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).

During 2012, far reaching decisions will shape European food systems for the future, including European Parliament and Council of Ministers discussing the Common Agricultural Policy 2014-2020 based upon proposals made by the Commission in October 2011.

Challenges to our future food supply such as climate change, increasing scarcity of natural resources and socio-economic shifts in rural areas, demand progressive change in policies and farm practices. Organic farming as a knowledge based, innovative system approach to sustainability and quality food production, along with EU wide certification, offers opportunities to achieving a broad range of these challenges.

The economic strengthening of High Nature Value (HNV) farms can ensure the enhancement of biodiversity and contribute to the viability of rural societies. Both farm systems, organic and HNV, should be the focus of the new policies within the EU. The 6th European Organic Congress “Smart change - towards a sustainable CAP” addresses the policy change needed to reach a greener, smarter, fairer CAP for the future and improve the availability of sustainably produced food for consumers while ensuring the credibility of certification for sustainable farm systems.
