Peru doubled organic exports over last 4 years - organic food exports will reach $322 million in 2012

Peru’s organic food exports will reach $322 million in 2012, according to Peru’s Commission for the Promotion of Tourism and Exports.

William Arteaga, agriculture coordinator at Promperu, said most of the country’s products were sold to Europe, but added that the Asian market was starting to grow significantly.

"We started strong in the Asian market and destinations that are very good opportunities - especially in the short term - are Japan and the Republic of Korea. Hopefully China’s big market is also suitable," he said, according to Andina.

Arteaga said the strongest markets were the U.S., Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, and Sweden.

Italy, UK and Canada, and Japan were also growing at a rapid rate, he said.

In 2010 the European Union received 64 percent of Peru’s organic products, while North America received 31 percent, according to Promperu.

Asia and South America only accounted for 3 percent of exports each, according to Arteaga.

"Knowing the Peruvian reality, we can increase the land involved in organic production much more. All around the world, they are opting for these products because there is a lot of concern about consuming healthier and safer products,” he said.
