| Australia: Organic business keeps growing IT started eight years ago as an offer to grow chemical-free vegetables for a friend who had been diagnosed with cancer and could not afford to buy organic produce. Now Kanga Chemical Free Fruit and Vegetables on Wooli Rd has developed into a full-time job for Michelle and Calvin Peuser of Sandy Crossing, which borders the Pillar Valley. The couple's three children Brayden and Jarrad, 15, and Caitlin, 11, help out on the farm and in the shop. The farm was ravaged by flood at the start of 2011 and closed for almost two months. Michelle said it had taken nearly the whole year to get the operation back on track but things were extremely busy for the family now. "I used to like my peace and quiet but we don't get that anymore," she said. "We've created a monster." Michelle said it was important for the farm to remain chemical-free because of the potential harm of farming chemicals on people's health and the high cost of buying certified organic. "We just think everyone should be able to afford it," she said. Michelle said her friend Ann-Marie Whalan, who died of cancer in 2004, needed to be able to get affordable chemical-free produce. She said her clientelle were largely tourists but she'd like to see more locals eating chemical-free. The couple recently bought a mobile coolroom and were selling produce on the highway and delivering to homes in the Clarence Valley.
