| New Zealand: Kaipara Oysters are organic-certified - New Zealand’s Most Sustainably Produced Oysters Source: fis.com Kaipara Oysters™ has combined unprecedented aquaculture techniques and exemplary farm and water management principals to establish a new benchmark for sustainable aquaculture production. With an abundance of marine life, the untouched, nutrient-rich waters of the Kaipara Harbour, located in the sparsely populated northwest region of New Zealand’s North Island, offers the ideal location for the world’s most sustainable oyster farm. In following its philosophy to minimise the human footprint in the pristine Kaipara waters the company has elected to build its 76-hectare farm, the largest oyster farm in the country, only from eco-friendly materials. This departure broke the mould, and remains truly a world’s first for the global aquaculture industry. To produce Kaipara Oysters, farming is based on collecting naturally occurring spat (oyster seed). With careful husbandry the oysters are then left to grow for approximately 18 months using the intertidal technique, which is exactly how nature intended for them to be grown. The resulting fruit of this labour are the delicious, deep-cupped Kaipara Oysters, which offer a maximum meat to shell ratio and a phenomenal eating experience. Over the last four decades, Kaipara has perfected an advanced production technique that allows the company to ‘snap-freeze’ its oysters the moment they reach peak condition to preserve the just-harvested taste and to give end-consumers the same ultimate eating experience every time. Kaipara Oysters are presented frozen in the half shell. This ensures there’s no waste and year-round availability. Kaipara Oysters are organic-certified under the stringent Asure Quality organic certification programme, which is accredited by IFOAM (International Federation Organic Agricultural Movement), one of the world’s leading organic organisations. In addition, the farm and factory are fully approved by the FDA (United States Food and Drug Administration) and the European Union (EU). Furthermore, it has been proven that buying frozen food can reduce carbon footprints as fresh products often have to be flown daily all over the world. Frozen oysters, however, can be transported over great distances much more carbon-effectively by sea because of their long shelf-life. About Kaipara Oysters Kaipara Oysters is a 2nd generation family-run aquaculture business. The vertically-integrated company established its roots in this field in the 1970s. Kaipara Oysters is now a thriving export-led business producing around 4 million oysters annually, of which more than 90 percent are exported, and a major employer in the local area. The company is internationally-regarded as a leading pioneer of sustainable oyster production.
