When BioFach China takes place at the INTEX Exhibition Centre in Shanghai/China from 24 to 26 May 2012, the organic market will have moved a big step forward compared with last year. Interest in organic food, natural cosmetics and natural textiles is growing unabated. Although more and more producers are trying to meet this steadily increasing demand in their own country, imports are also gaining in importance.

Evidence for this trend is the fact that BioFach China is becoming increasingly international: 13 % of the manufacturers came from abroad in 2011. In the last five years BioFach China has expanded rapidly. More than 14,500 visitors (+ 27 %) and 342 exhibitors were the record figures registered at the anniversary event in May 2011. Many participants praised the professional nature of the fair. For the sixth BioFach in Shanghai, NürnbergMesse China is expecting around 15,000 visitors and more than 350 exhibitors, and the exhibition area is likely to be much bigger too.

According to Chinese government statistics, the value of the organic market is the equivalent of about 1.55 billion US dollars, which means that turnover in China has quadrupled over the last five years. High growth rates are predicted. The supply of organic food in all sales channels has increased to meet the rising demand, and that applies not only to Chinese and international chains such as Carrefour, Metro or Walmart but also to businesses specializing in organic and natural products like Lohao City (picture) or Beyond Organic. The Lohao City chain, with around 20 stores all over China, reported half-year growth in turnover of 35 % compared with the year before. Currently, organic consumption is still concentrated mainly on the conurbations, with the capital Peking alone contributing approximately 30 % to total organic sales in the retail trade.
