Be on your way to learning how to successfully garden organically in an urban setting with a unique three-part community class at Lake Trail School, beginning on Monday, January 23.

Session One, Monday, January 23 - Starting a new garden - Planning

This first session will cover the basic ideas behind an organic approach to urban food production. We will discuss site analysis, planning, and design strategies to maximize productivity in small spaces including: site preparation; maintaining and improving soil fertility; deciding what to grow and how much. Primary consideration will be given to annual veggies and culinary herbs.

Participants are encouraged to bring drawings of their yards and existing gardens for individual consultation and to be used as example for the class.

Session two, Monday, February 20 - Site Preparation and Sheet Mulching

This session will focus on maintaining and improving soil fertility and preparing the site for planting. Discussion will include soil quality; simple techniques for learning about your soil; what the weeds tell us; organic soil amendments and composting. After covering the basics, we will move outdoors to continue the discussion, lay out a garden plot; and do a sheet mulching exercise. Participants are encouraged to bring a handful of soil from their own site for discussion.

Session three, Monday, March 19 - Planting

This session will focus on planting the garden. We will discuss how to decide what to grow; how much to plant; seeds or starts; companion planting; crop rotation and where to place plants in the garden based on light and water requirements. After covering the basics, we will move outdoors to continue the discussion and plant the garden prepared in session two.

All classes will be held in Room 103 at Lake Trail School from 6: 30 pm to 8: 30 pm. Participant fee is $15 per class or $40 for all three.

The class instructor is Elaine Codling, owner of Vancouver Island Permaculture.
