Organic milk products an export success

Dairy products account for almost half of Denmark’s organic exports, and are also the organic product group which saw the biggest growth in exports from 2009 to 2010 as documented by the latest figures from Statistics Denmark. According to Organic Denmark’s export manager, sales will increase even more in the coming years.

“Right now, the outlook for Danish organic exports is so much more positive than it has been for years,” says Organic Denmark’s Export Manager Klaus Bentzen with confidence.

Dairy products are the most exported organic product group in Denmark. In 2010, dairy products accounted for 49 per cent of total organic exports, a figure which saw a 41 per cent increase from 2008 to 2010 according to new figures from Statistics Denmark. According to Klaus Bentzen, dairy products are driving the development of organic consumption both in Denmark and in our neighbouring countries, and he is in no doubt that this success will continue in the coming years.

“In future, we will see intensifying competition within sales of organic milk. If developments on our neighbouring export markets are as strong, which is the way it is looking, it will be difficult for production to keep pace with demand. The dairies will be competing for milk supplies from farmers, while the shops will be battling for the best dairies.” In his view, shops have an increasing need for more volume and a broader product range, and he explains why the outlook for Danish organic dairy farming is so exciting at the moment:

“Danish products are perceived as high-quality products, and the dairies in Denmark produce a wide selection of products, they have large volumes of organic milk and there are many farmers wanting to convert to organic farming. The Danish set-up within organic farming is therefore probably the strongest in Europe,” says Klaus Bentzen.

More ‘biologisch’ milk for Germany

In 2010, the biggest importer was neighbouring Germany, which received 44 per cent of total organic exports from Denmark. Germany will remain the primary export market due to its proximity, its size and the expected market growth, deems Klaus Bentzen.

Dairy giant Arla also sees Germany as the most important market in relation to boosting exports of Danish organic dairy products.

“In Germany, organics is not yet a widespread phenomenon, but it has started to grow. More and more Germans are taking a liking to ‘biologisch’ food, as it’s called, and this includes dairy products,” says Arla’s Chief Press Officer, Theis Brøgger.

So far, Arla’s milk has been sold as private label, under the German groceries’ own product names. However, before long Arla expects to launch organic products in Germany under its own name.

“We want to sell organic milk to the Germans under the Arla brand, which will enable us to market ourselves more directly to consumers and tell them more about the products. If we succeed, it will definitely mean big and exciting prospects for organic exports,” says Theis Brøgger.

The organic dairy Thise is also focusing on Denmark’s neighbouring export markets – including Germany.

“Thise has been sold on the German health market for about 20 years, and sales have been very stable. We are now engaging in more directly targeted sales efforts, and within the past couple of years our products have also been finding their way onto supermarket shelves. At the moment our products are stocked by four German chains, and we are very keen to pursue this path,” says Thise’s Sales Manager Mogens Poulsen.

Facts:

• Total exports of organic products increased by 15 per cent from 2009 to 2010.

• Danish organic exports have more than tripled in four years.
