| Austria: More organic food for Austrian schools Source: viennatimes.at Food in Austrian schools could soon go organic. Health minister Alois Stöger has high hopes for encouraging healthy eating amongst young people, employing nutritionists around the country in efforts to transform the often unhealthy Austrian school buffet. "Almost one in five of all school children in Austria are overweight. The reason for these levels of obesity, besides a lack of exercise, is an unbalanced diet," suggested Dr. Manuel Schätzer. The advisor on healthy eating is now on an eco-mission to get rid of fatty foods such as Leberkäse (Austrian ground meat, baked in a loaf tin) and sugary drinks and hopes to replace them with salads and fresh fruit juice with ingredients from local producers. The team of experts employed by the health minister are now travelling to schools around the country in an attempt to help with the problem of unhealthy eating. Not only this but they plan to give support and advice on a voluntary basis to teachers and the operators of the buffets. One of the first schools to make the organic transition is the Goethe Gymnasium in Vienna whose "Cool is(s)t Gesund" lunch providers are hoping to help combat the growing problem in Austrian schools.
