I always try to encourage people to have a go at growing their own veg, even if it is just a pot or two of herbs on the windowsill. Once you get the bug it is quite compulsive. And if you’re going to take the time to do it all, you might as well grow organically. Most organic gardening is just common sense and if you are at all like me you won’t want to put anything poisonous on your plants anyway.

After all you are going to eat them. So if you’ve always wanted to grow your own but have never given it a go why not join me this year and have a bash? The one thing you will need is some ground. You don’t need very much, but it helps enormously if it gets full sun most of the day.

Like all plants, vegetables need daylight to grow and most of them do better with plenty of sunshine. You can grow a lot of vegetables in containers on a patio if that is all you have, but they will need to be kept well watered in the summer. Lettuce, tomatoes, beans, sweetcorn and even potatoes will thrive in tubs of good, rich compost.

Start small to begin with so you don’t turn your gardening into a chore. Square foot gardening is an excellent technique if you don’t have much space or time. Measure out a square yard and dig it over really well adding as much bulky organic matter like compost or manure as you can manage.

It shouldn’t take more than an hour or two at most. Divide the yard into nine square feet and grow something different in each one. Because the area is very manageable it can be very productive. You can weed the whole thing in 10 minutes flat and sow new plants to fill the gaps left when you harvest.

The easiest things to start with are broad beans, beetroot, French beans, lettuce, sweetcorn, tomatoes, potatoes, chard and courgettes.
