| USA: Organic farming is on the rise Source: wcax.com BURLINGTON, Vt. - Vermont's Organic Farmers have gathered for a winter meeting for the 30th year. The movement has grown from a just few, to thousands. Sen. Patrick Leahy remembers when he first tackled the subject of organic farming in front of his peers in Washington D.C, and Governor Peter Shumlin joked that when he was growing up more "organic product" was smoked than consumed, but both say times have changed. The multi-billion dollar industry employs thousands of Vermonters, many of whom made the trip to Burlington to learn the latest from industry leaders, and how Washington's partisan feuding could impact legislation that will affect life on the organic farm."Now things are not going smoothly with Congress these days" Says Leahy. The 2008's farm-bill is due to expire at the end of September, Leahy says he'll make sure $ 23 Billion in proposed Agricultural cuts won't hit the small Vermont farmer "It's going to be a tough fight but I intend to win." Regardless of what happens in Washington, Governor Shumlin says the state's organic farmers, especially the fresh faces, are poised to lead the nation in the wake of Tropical Storm Irene. "In a nation where people have figured out that what eat, where it comes from, what's in it, who grew it matters, we've got an extraordinarily bright future... because of you, our best agricultural days are ahead of us". Shumlin adds. That is, leaders say, as long as the Vermont brand remains synonymous with quality.
